After the white man had come and gave her that card so he could help her even do she didn't go with him because she was afraid that he would embarrassed her in the street. So she decided to keep the letter but to hide It under her carpet. She hides it for the reason that she doesn't want Mumtaz to know about it because it could take her life away. Because that showing that she is planning to leave.
